Nike Dunks Craze

I am amazed at the craze people possess for Nike Dunks. My colleague Jack is a Washington University graduate with a respectable earning in NY. Before I continue with his story, I presume that you might have already had a nice picture of his lifestyle there. But the guy beats every sense by his craze for sneakers and the amount he carelessly spends on buying them.

Jack is mad over sneakers just like other obsessed zombies, doesn’t bother standing in queues outside shoe stores right from the wee hours before each Nike Dunks models are released. His is not the only one bitten by the Nike Dunks bug and like all sneaker junkies he is crazy over any new coolest, rarest pair of shoes. It is shocking that he spends half his yearly salary on buying new pair of shoes every year.

Jack is not alone; he was the last man to stand in the line when Nike Dunk SB and Pigeon were released; there were 70 others ahead of him in the queue that day. What really eludes me is why people are crazy to collect expensive shoes even when they are sure of not wearing them for the rest of their lives. It is incredible how obsessed they are with their sneakers. The story Jack told me of a guy he knows completely bowled me over, he said, the guy owns 300 pairs of Nike Dunks among others!!

If you stumble upon message boards devoted to Nike Dunks where shoe buffs frequent you will treat yourself into another shocker of sorts; they are there to share among themselves when the next release is planned for. It is unjust to equate this obsession to philately even after seeing how Jack gets up early in the morning to drive 50 odd miles to stand in queues on the pavements of a sneaker store. Amazingly, he ridicules the idea of waiting in his car till the store opens, for him buying first also matters equally high as buying them!!

Alright, how big is the rage? For shoe heads like my colleague, spending $500 on a pair of sneakers is a status symbol especially when it is Nike Dunk SB, Pro Zoo York or Pigeon. Only few of us in the office know how he manages the rest of the month after paying $1200 for something you wear under your feet.

Although Nike Dunks Paris costs $159 and $65 odd for most other models, the limited release of each model is what pushes up the rates as each exclusive store gets not more than 20-30 pairs. The intention is not making a few quick bucks but keeping the rage intact. As if this is nothing, special editions released in a handful of cities only which creates a big agitation amongst the Nike Dunks fads.

It is these types of madness that drives Nike Dunks and it is the sneakers that make collectors die to wear them.
